When you decide that it is time to go house shopping, there are things that you want to look for and pay attention to when you are looking. By making a list of these things before you start on your journey, you will have an easier time with your shopping.
The first thing when you are house shopping is to decide where you want to buy, and what type of house and size you want. This can vary wildly depending on where you live, where in one city a typical house can be 1000 square feet, and another city could be 2000 square feet. You need to decide what is going to be best for you and your situation.
Is there a particular style that you are looking for? Some people have their heart set on a bungalow, others on a split level, and everything else in between. And for others it isn’t overly important. This is something you need to know and let your realtor know. Maybe you want a condo or a townhouse, but it has to have an attached garage.
Location is also very important, as in many large cities, you need to make sure that your commute to work isn’t unreasonable. If you live in a smaller city, this may not be as relevant, but there may still be location considerations such as children’s schools, or other reasons why you may prefer to stay in an area or avoid others.
Some people place higher important on some features when they are house shopping. For people that love to cook, they may focus on the kitchen and want some very specific features in the house they buy. While you can always remodel at a later date, depending on your budget, this may not be an option.
Price is a big factor when you are out house shopping. It is always best to talk to your mortgage broker to find out how much money you are able to spend before you start shopping. There is no sense looking at houses only to find out later that you cannot be approved for that price.
While these are just the basics of the things to consider when you are going out house shopping, they are some of the more important ones to think about. You likely will come up with more when you get out there and start looking.
